What is Soft Matter?

Soft matter is a young field that has seen an enormous increase in activity over the last decade. Output is rapidly growing, and the impact spans basic condensed matter physics, biophysics, chemistry, materials science, biology, cell biology, mathematics, and medicine. The breadth of industrial applications is impressive, ranging from the oil industry, via cosmetics, to tissue engineering. Societies are forming that exclusively deal with the physics and chemistry of soft matter.
